Here's the long & short of it. We have been & are being pushed, against our will, into a future of unfathomable death & destruction, by massively profitable industries & their allies. In the early 1980s, @exxonmobil knew *exactly* which trajectory they were sending us all on. 1/

Except that (whoops) their projections were too optimistic: they predicted 1°C warming. We are already at 1.2°C. Exxon scientists thought we'd take another 10 years to get there. But make no mistake: they knew what they were pushing us into, for profit.

And *any* politician, journalist, business leader or celebrity-influencer, using fairytales of economic growth and technological progress to claim that anything short of the rapid scaling down of energy use & animal products will ward off the worst, is complicit. 4/

We can do this rapid scaling down of energy demand & animal products while preserving (and improving) human well-being, & while ramping up low carbon energy capacity. Such pathways are the topic of my research. But we cannot save our lives while saving profit accumulation. End/
