I’m convinced House Hunters is a documentary series about marriage
Watching this early years, married couple looking for house in the DMV.

They are looking for a place in PG county.

They are working on having children. He’s spending the $.

She wants modern, move in ready, a cul-de-sac, and a white kitchen.

He wants a yard to play football.
To understand the role of suburbia, McMansion, American isolationism, castle doctrine, modern relationships, gender roles/identity, and why climate change is killing us—watch HGTV.

I’m not sure why I went to college now and blame @SocioSustainabl for introducing me to this world
Basically everything in @HGTV is why @ThreadATL continues to exist...and this is so addictive
Here’s the thing, I like it now. I hate procedural programming but I’ve been thinking about how appealing all of this is.

But it’s time for urbanism on @HGTV

I’m available but until then. Let’s watch together 👇🏽
Couples budget is $500,000 no wiggle room in the DMV. Specifically Prince George’s County, here’s the thing...do you know how expensive the DMV IS???

Next 👇🏽
Couple talks to real estate agent on what they want...
Until FDR and the New Deal you basically either lived on a farm, in a city, or a small town of maybe 3 dozen buildings in total. As the modern suburbia developed via the New Deal in the 1930s-70sand then expanded b/c Eisenhower’s Federal Highway Act in the 1950s-70s
I say that in regards to Americans obsession with ‘space’ in selection of house, neighborhoods, and regions.

Our nature to pick a big house with big yards and minimal neighbors is built upon a scenario that wasn’t built for the future of society.

Suburbia requires A LOT
I talk to @_bithia about this all the time and @MagRags at least once a year on this...but are the suburbs ACTUALLY sustainable??

If y’all understood alone how much it comes just to maintain current roads and how much we’ve spent on highways, you’d wanna speak to the manager NOW
Every couple on House Hunters, Love It or List It, etc all want houses that are 3-4,000+ sq feet.
The average American home is typically half of that.

https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2019/09/american-houses-big/597811/
Here’s the other thing, our new construction homes are getting bigger.

http://money.cnn.com/2014/06/04/rea
But we’re not adding a comparable amount of bedrooms, go figure.
McMansions are only averaging 3-4br

So when people have kids, despite a 4,000 sq ft house they believe they need more space when in reality they needed more rooms, specifically bedrooms: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/06/08/houses-bedrooms-family-size-homes/2390141/
So back to this episode. The couple wants at minimum 3,500 sq ft home.

Alongside a brand new, modern kitchen and must be in white.

A long side a big front and back yard. Let’s assume it’s a minimum 1/4 acre both front and back, in the DMV you are paying A LOT
House 1, part 1
House 1, part 2: where’s the yard? (It’s a shared yard of a decent size btw)
House 1, part 3: the master bath is not modern and unacceptable
Also back to House 1, part 2.

Americans have a weird obsession as as a result of suburbanization to want to be isolated from their neighbors but want to live around their neighbors.

Also everyone wants a big back yard for the kids when that’s at max in use maybe 6-8 years?
Anyway, back to the show and House 2
Oh my bad, back to House 1 again. I’m w/ the husband here and it seems on everyone of these shows they always offer the better house after they raise the money
Okay, now back to House 2, not much here except:

I’m not sure what the obsession and how much space the husband believes he needs to play football at a residential house
Continued, but based on how many times he mentions football and his childhood it’s clear this means a lot to him. Also what if he has children who aren’t into football, sports, or care about a big yard?
Still at House 2, this is where the couple are still not happy w/ the size of the house, it’s 3,000 sq ft. And they both agree in wanting at least 3,500 sq ft.

But not big enough for family goals, but I understand.

This house is almost 2x the size of a standard American house.
Now onto House 3 which IS ALMOST 6,000 sq ft which is like the size of 2-3 fast food restaurants or almost 1 Golden Corral.

But it ONLY has FOUR br & 3.5 ba...what??
House 3 is over husbands budget, he is not pleased:
Wife is not please w/ kitchen, husband could care less, leaves and looks at where he could mount his tv
But husband has finally found his yard to play football.

Wife is still confused.

Wife also is confused as to why there is carpet upstairs then it goes back to hardwood, she’s got a point.
Nothing else to see really so here is the house they picked:
