The last ten months have been, for a number of reasons, revealing about the different stories we tell ourselves given similar (but not always the same) information. For example... (1/5)
Given the slower than expected roll out of the vaccine, there are some people who tell themselves (and others) that this means we must settle in for the long haul. Maybe 2022 will finally be better they say. (2/5)
But it is just as reasonable, given the same info, to hope we can do better and expect that something like normal is achieved by the fall (like Fauci has said). The risks of either story are about the same, I think. (3/5)
People who choose the long run story have to live without the comfort that this could almost be over. People who believe we could get their sooner may be setting themselves up for disappointment. (4/5)
But either way, what fascinates me is how people can turn the same info into two competing narratives and only time will tell which was right. (5/5)
And, lest this be read as a relativistic, all stories are true, kind of thing, that is really not what I’m getting at. I’m saying that predicting the future is difficult, but at some point when it is past, we will know whether we got there sooner or later (6/5).
