Lots of social media talk lately about 100-person limit at outdoor HS sports events. It’s a more complex issue than some let on.

Could you safely have more than 100 people in most outdoor HS sports venues with Covid? Probably. Especially with mask mandate. 1/
Venues over 10k capacity get 7% capacity. Let’s say, conservatively, an average HS stadium holds 2,500 people. That’s 175 people. Obviously there are many venues that hold more than that, and some that hold less. 2/
I’ve spoken with many ADs & admins about this topic over the last several weeks as outdoor sports have come to life. Some support allowing more, but a significant number do not. And it has nothing to do with ability to spread people out safely. 3/
Every person attending a game has to be screened for symptoms and have their temps taken. Many (most?) districts are requiring training for employees who conduct screening. They also have to provide PPE for those people & digital thermometers. 4/
Having enough trained staff with proper PPE & enough thermometers is a concern for many with 100 spectators. Adding more makes that concern greater. Some schools are already having waits of 20, 30, even 45 mins to get people screened & admitted. 5/
When you consider you may have JV & varsity games, or different sports on the same day/at same time, that stretches the resources of a school thin. This is where most ADs/admins have concerns about letting more fans into games. 6/
Often times people think it’s easy to just make changes. Covid has taught us that’s not the case with HS sports. Many of those I’ve spoke with have said something along the lines of, “We are more focused on having kids there to compete, not fans there to watch.” 7/
The top priority of these ADs/admins when it comes to HS sports this year is providing kids a chance to play their sports in as safe an environment as possible.
