Hook is such a beautiful film. Here are some of my favorite moments:
Hook has so many beautiful shots, props, costumes, paintings, and sets. Maggie Smith, Dustin Hoffman, Bob Hoskins, and of course Robin Williams. Perhaps the best music from John Williams. Maybe the best poster from Drew Struzan. I treasure every part of this film.
Everything in the movie is so well-considered. Hook clapping his hook, and Smee helping out by lending one of his hands to clap. The neck accent piece on Hook’s outfit, which matches the end of his dagger, which matches the back of his ship. The various “hook” attachments.
Every set has a million things to look at. The graffiti on the Lost Boys’ hideout. The various signs of opulence in Hook’s quarters, like a *shoe rack* for his identical shoes. The baseball scene with the Pirates uniforms (for both teams!), perfect “home” and “away” versions.
Tink in the dollhouse. Tink’s footprints on Peter’s tuxedo. Tink’s clock house with items from Peter’s wallet like his ID and credit card. How many “jumbo” props needed to get made for scenes with Julia Roberts? I feel like I could go on forever about every moment in this movie.
Flying *Pan Am* in the film? Brilliant. Of course the movie had to come out the *same month* that Pan Am goes out of business. Oh, and the nursery wallpaper that tells the story of Peter Pan? Incredible. And the hook-shaped latch on the window? Perfect. All of it.
Every time I watch it, I wonder whether it’s just nostalgia because it came out when I was a kid. But then I appreciate so many of these things in the film, I can’t help but think it’s a masterpiece... with a 29% Rotten Tomatoes score. How could anyone dislike this film?
I can’t believe I never noticed this before now, but— at the very beginning of the film, Peter is on an airplane to London, and there’s a faint announcement from the “captain.”
