If we allow socialism and nationalism to become our guiding stars in 2020s America as they became in 1920s Europe — recent history can tell us what the next few decades will look like.
To nationalists, remember that America is great — not for its own sake — but because of our founding ideals for Liberty and Justice.
To socialists, remember that the pursuit of Liberty has done more to promote the welfare of the common man than any system in human history.
As F.A. Hayek wrote of the European socialists and nationalists, they fought fiercely because they competed for the same minds — those who believed in government power.

But neither had anything in common with the classical liberal — those who believed in individual Liberty.
Here in America, we share our ideological roots in the principles of Liberty.
Until recently, the left identified as “liberal” for decades — the term popularized by John Locke and our founding generation for proponents of economic and personal Liberty.
Until recently, much of the right identified as “constitutional conservative” — seeking to conserve the principles of Liberty that made our free society possible.
Our shared aim as a nation is Liberty.

Our mission as Americans is not to dominate our neighbors, but to defend their right to be free.
