The BBC dub was actually recorded in the year 2000 for the (now defunct) BBC Choice channel.
Lum the Invader Girl was actually a GAG DUB!
It wasn't meant to be a serious attempt at dubbing the series, thus only episodes 1 and 3 were done.

They were dubbed for BBC Choice's 'Japan Night' and only screened once.
As with other gag dubs, only major story beats (that match the animation) are kept and all the dialogue is rewritten

The dub is INCREDIBLY British (it's meant to be, as it was created for a British audience).
Along with British humour there is swearing, references to other media (including Pokemon) and breaking of the fourth wall.

Whether they remember doing this 21 years ago or knew anything about Urusei Yatsura before dubbing this is unknown. But probably not
After understanding the context I can quite confidently say I was wrong about the BBC dub being terrible, it's actually hilarious and well done!

I love British style humour but also understand it's not for everyone.
Hearing British accents in dubs is also kinda rare so I could understand people being put off.
There were a lot of references that went over my head as well (I don't know what "The Archers" is
)

I strongly suggest you watch the full episodes on YouTube, the channel has cleaned up the audio and put it over what looks to be there Blu Ray version.

These clips were never officially released (or acknowledged by the BBC) so what you hear would most likely have been recorded on VHS when it aired.

The "Lum no Love Song" opening wasn't used, rather just a the eyecatch with a "Lum the Invader Girl" logo on it. The end credits are a (very) short version of "Uchū wa taihen da" (Space is super weird)

I found researching this to be super interesting, entertaining and quite surprising.
