/ While Leipzig-Liverpool goes ahead in Budapest on Tuesday, it’s still an open question where the return leg of the CL R16 tie on 10 March will be staged. Not likely Anfield. Good Kicker background on this.
I’ll try to sum it up in the following thread.
/ UEFA have provisionally asked Liverpool to seek an alternative venue. Why? Under the Sachsen health rules, German resident travellers coming from a mutation zone (the U.K. is mutation zone A1) must quarantine for 2 weeks. Exceptions for pro athletes don’t apply.
/ This would mean Leipzig having to postpone games on 14th & 19th against Bielefeld. After that it’s the international break. The Sachsen health ordinance only runs until 5 March currently but it’s thought likely to be extended given the epidemiological situation.
/ UEFA want clarity on a venue by 1 March. Should it go to another country, Leipzig would have to pay 300,000 Euro compensation to Liverpool. Why, even though the U.K. is the “problem mutation zone” here? Because a German law is at the root of the need for a venue change.
/ Hope that explains it. Again credit to Kicker’s (very busy) chief reporter Oliver Hartmann. /ends
