I tried reading WATCHMEN in my youth and never got through it. I’m having a much easier time with it on this second attempt. I wanted to at least give this another shot before checking out the HBO series. https://twitter.com/mikeh5856/status/1361083095584301066
I recall when the HBO series started that people were complaining it was too political and, fucking hell, did they ever actually read this book?
Because this thing is super fucking political, and if readers somehow didn’t notice that, it’s pretty clear they have super-questionable politics! Which leads me to...
How the fuck could anybody hero worship Rorschach? Like, who actually ever mistook this character for a good guy? Moore makes it pretty damn clear in this book’s opening pages that Rorschach is a right-wing, bigoted fascist and is very plainly *not* a hero. He’s a fucking psycho!
It’s particularly hilarious to recall CGers complaining about the HBO series and modern-day comics as being too political and comics needs to go back to the heyday of non political comics like... WATCHMEN? because... Jesus fucking Christ. Clearly they never read this! 🤣🤣🤣
The flashback in #2 in which The Comedian and Nite Owl are gassing and shooting at protestors, asking each other “What’s happened to the American Dream?” and Comedian says, “It came true. You’re lookin’ at it.” plays especially potent in the aftermath of Jan. 6 and BLM marches.
That was a real solid gut punch. This book has a real clear political perspective on the roles of superheroes and to have CGers claim otherwise is one hell of a willful display of ignorance (best case scenario).
