what I think is such an important and under-appreciated aspect to the writing in bnha is how clearly the lens you use to view something matters. We got introduced to All Might through Izuku and his worship of the man he sees as the ultimate hero—only later do we see AM through+
+others’ eyes, like fanatics and villains, and those who can’t live up to his ideals—or even other teachers who note that he’s not doing the most spectacular job of mentoring Izuku. On the other hand, the first lens we have to view Endeavor through is Shouto. Shouto has a lot of+
+resentment and complicated feelings towards his father, so we as the audience (from Izuku’s POV, through Shouto’s “lens”) see him as a bad person—even a villainous one. It’s only later from the perspectives of characters like Hawks, and the GP, and the rest of his family that+
+more layers are revealed/uncovered about him. He’s more complicated than a bad dad, just as AM is more complicated than the symbol of peace. I don’t think this is an accident. A major thru line of the storytelling is that hero is largely in the eye of the beholder. Brilliant.
