Given Mr. Jobbins has since deleted his tweet, I'll have to use a thread to explain why he's not only a massive racists, but why he's also very ignorant.
Of the current Wales 6N squad, 10 were not born in Wales but have ended up playing for Wales through various reasons. Of those it is worth noting:
- Nick Tomkins: qualifies for Wales through his grandfarther. He has 12 England U-20 caps and has played for the England Saxons
- Johnny Williams: Born in England to a Welsh farther. 5 England U-20 caps and U-20 World Cup winner and 1 uncapped England game against the Barbarians (that game came 4 months after he said in an interview he considered himself Welsh).
Why aren't either of these playes (or Gareth Anscombe for that matter) receiving the same amount of hate from people like Mr Jobbins as is Willis Halaholo? The answer is most likely race.
Willis Halaholo was born in Auckland in 1990 and played for the New Zealand Secondary Schools in 2007. Two years later, he played at the IRB Junior World Championship for Tonga U-20.
After hardly playing for his club in NZ he moved to Cardiff in 2016 looking for opportunities.
Eventually, after three years of residence he qualified to play for Wales and was called up for a game against Barbarians, but injury prevented him from representing his adopted nation. Yesterday, he eventually won his first cap, saying it was a "huge honour"
In the 10 years between his Tonga U-20 cap and his Wales cap, *he chose* not to play for Tonga. For 7 of those years he didn't even know he'd ever move to Wales. The only way Tonga are affected here is by the fact he never wanted to play for them.
Willis Halaholo's story will probably resonate with many of foreigners who have chosen Wales as their residence. If someone like him who is representing such a Welsh institution as is the national rugby team is not welcomed, what chance is their for the rest?
Halaholo has chosen to make Wales his home as have nearly 200,000 non-British people. Mr Jobbins' words are a sign that these people, especially if they are not white, are not allowed to come to Wales, consider themselves Welsh nor represent Wales in any capacity.
The notion that the World Ruby policies regarding selection being detrimental to the smaller rugby nations is absolutely laughable. 60% of Samoan or Spanish players are not born in the nations they represent. Tier 2 and 3 Nations benefit far more by the policy than they lose.
Whilst 'small' rugby nations have to be supported, there cannot be a rule for one and a rule for the rest. Wales, Tonga, England, New Zealand and everyone else have to play with the same rules. With these rules, Tonga have 'lost' Halaholo, but gained Maʻafu Fia
Plenty has to be done to bridge the gap between the 'big' and 'small' rugby nations and there maybe should be a reformation of the rules. Regardless, even if just from a rugby standpoint, Mr Jobbins' views are incorrect and quite ignorant of the realities of the game.
Furthermore, there is the notion of nationality and feeling of belonging which is unique to any individual and Mr. Jobbins has no right to determine or interfere with what that is.
Being Spanish-born to a Welsh dad and having lived in Wales for the last 6 years, I know only too well how nationality and sense of belonging can change and how fluid it is. My identity at 24 is not the same as at 14 and I doubt it will be the same at 54.
In the end, rugby aside, Mr Jobbins is falling into a trap we unfortunately see too often with some Yes Cymru types. Nationalism is not just blood and soil, far from it. Welsh independence will never be won with just white Welsh-speaking Welsh-born.
Identity is fluid and there are many in Wales who, despite not being born in the country or being able to claim heritage, are now considering themselves Welsh or are contemplating the notion for the first times in their lives.
Mr Jobbins is pushing these people aside using the notion that if you were something before, you cannot be Welsh now Until Yes Cymru realise that you can be non-Welsh born, non-Welsh speaking and non-Plaid Cymru voting but still support Wales and its independence, they will fail
