Today marks 3 years since my sister, Carmen Schentrup, was murdered at MSD High School in Parkland, FL.
As I think about the state of gun violence prevention policy since Parkland, there are 3 existential threats to current policy gains that need to be addressed

As I think about the state of gun violence prevention policy since Parkland, there are 3 existential threats to current policy gains that need to be addressed
1/
1) Preventing Police Violence. Gun violence prevention policy is built upon law enforcement as an enforcement mechanism and without trust in law enforcement and equitable treatment of individuals the potential effectiveness of policies in reducing violence is greatly reduced
2/
2/
Example: Extreme Risk Protection Orders, also know as red flag laws. People need to report dangerous behavior to law enforcement for the law to be used, however if trust in law enforcement is low, the overall effectiveness of the law is low as well
3/
3/
2) Ghost Guns. The ability to buy an untraceable gun parts online that anyone with a screwdriver can build into a functioning weapon at home has the ability to eviscerate the effectiveness of background checks if not dealt with seriously
4/

3) Democracy Reform. Without creating system where everyone paying taxes can actually exercise their right to vote and all barriers to voting are eliminated, minority rule will become the norm and many of the small gains we have made will be eliminated
5/
5/
Without a democracy that represents the a majority we face an ever increasing chance of violence and disorder. Democracy reform is important for not only preventing gun violence, but for progress on a multitude of issues issues from climate to reproductive rights.

These threats must be taken seriously and addressed with the urgency they demand if we are to #HonorWithAction and continue progress in preventing gun violence. A failure to do so will mean failing the memory of those who were taken by gun violence. We must act.

Gun Violence Prevention policy aside, I think today is also a reminder for every Parkland Survivor about what is most important:
