/ I agree with @kevinjonheller but not for the same reasons. #Israel did *not* "lobby behind the scenes" for @KarimKhanQC & it should not be thought that #Israel was *officially* in favour of him. He is highly regarded here by the academic & professional legal community alike.
/ The only people of consequence; the Attorney General's Special Counsel for Int. Law & the @IsraelMFA Legal Counsel (both excellent & responsible lawyers & answerable to the Attorney-General) would *NOT* have supported a move which would impact on @KarimKhanQC's impartiality.
/ There are many so-called "experts" in #Israel spouting on the topic; politicians & academics but only those mentioned in 2/👆 & their immediate superiors are entitled to pronounce on *official* #Israel policy vis-à-vis the @IntlCrimCourt.
/ Only @YoavZehavi knows the source of the "lobbying" information because he is the journalist who published it on the @kann_news breaking news website. He would not be expected to disclose his sources so we can draw a blank there.
/ To the best of my knowledge, however, no other #Israel journalist received this "scoop" first-hand - a "scoop" that I only first saw between the first and second ballot - and I was keeping a very close eye on things from the #Israel end of things.
/ My informed understanding is that it was *specifically not* in #Israel's interests to "work behind the scenes" to promote @KarimKhanQC's candidacy because it was understood that he was likely to win & any "lobbying" would be seized upon by #Israel's detractors - as it was;
/ and to the best of my informed knowledge, this gem of "lobbying" information did not originate from any official #Israel source - rather foreign sources and could have been calculated to ensure that their preferred candidate would benefit thereby.
/ As @kevinjonheller rightly states @KarimKhanQC didn't need any support from #Israel & #Israel will not be advised by anyone of true consequence to subject him to the outrageous deligitimization which was accorded Fatou #Bensouda by various outlets & sectors of #Israel society.
/ Even though #Israel is not a State Party to the @IntlCrimCourt & does not accept the preliminary ruling for reasons given by many well-respected academics & State Parties during the litigation, it would not have lobbied for @KarimKhanQC thereby prejudicing his independence.
/ Personally, I welcome @KarimKhanQC 's election because I have had the privilege to work alongside him & I know that he is fair, fiercely independent and an excellent lawyer. Whatever decision he will take on the #Palestine issue will be his alone & for the right reasons.
