As a member of the #PHWA I’m upset they amplified this article, which casts DeAngelo as the victim in the lede, uses the false phrase, “there is nothing uglier in life than to be labeled racist,” and uselessly quotes white teammates and associates as evidence he’s not racist. https://twitter.com/thephwa/status/1360978967482626050
This doesn’t feel like great journalism that deserves amplification, but a PR puff piece that only brings up DeAngelo’s past indiscretions in order to dismiss or excuse them — “the slur he directed at a Caucasian teammate was ethnic in nature, not related to race” (???).
From there it pivots to focussing only on good things — charity support and hockey camps for kids — without truly wrestling with DeAngelo’s history or speaking to anyone who might be critical of him, apart from Miller’s agent who has ample reason to keep his client out of this.
I’m a pretty newish member of the PHWA and have minimal power — heck, I’ll probably get backlash for speaking up like this — but I couldn’t let that tweet go without comment. This is not the type of article that should be held up as representative of the PHWA.
