The main takeaway for me tonight is that a Balkan politician not backed by massive capital, with consistent views over many years, who also does not mind being bruised up by the police for the cause he believes in, won elections in a landslide. One thing that I’ve noticed as I report about Kosovo more is that I am baffled how prejudices about Kosovo in the region prevent people from understanding how much of a healthier democracy it can sometimes be, and how progressive its voter base is.
Ironically, those hopeful that this will have a ripple effect in the region fail to understand that it took Kurti 20+ years to get here.
Also, if we are thinking that the average citizen in Belgrade, Sarajevo, Zagreb etc. will be inspired by Kurti’s win, this will hardly happen as for most people Kosovo is both uninteresting and inaccessible at best.
