sunset wanted friends. in the fall of sunset shimmer, celestia told her to start making friends because connections are important. that’s why when sunset didn’t succeed in making friends, she turned to the dark side. she didn’t think it was possible for her to make friends, so +

that’s why she sang this:

was the darkness i acquired”

power was all she desired because she didn’t think there was another way. she saw that she couldn’t make friends.

“i’m so sorry... i didn’t know there was another way” +

“it was only after i saw the true magic of friendship you and your friends possessed, that i realized the error of my ways.”

“i used to be just like you. sure, i was popular, but i was lonely.”

“back in the day
i used to walk these halls
acting tough

loneliness is what drove sunset to steal the crown and become ambitious and greedy. she couldn’t get what she wanted most, so she thought power would be the only thing that would make her happy. she was +

misguided and lonely, but after she saw that there IS another way, that it IS possible for her to have friends, she did her best to leave her past behind and become a totally new person. that’s why in forgotten friendship it’s really painful for her to see that everyone hates +

her again, after she’s worked so hard to prove herself worthy of everyone’s trust.

“so you have this idea of who you’re supposed to be, but no one at school sees you that way.”

after all the work she’s put into becoming a better person, suddenly no one remembers any of that. +

everyone hates her again. she doesn’t have any friends. worse, her friends HATE her. she was demoted back to the arrogant and lonely student she used to be. it was like she never changed in the first place. wallflower took all of that away from sunset. but despite that, sunset +

was able to forgive wallflower and learn from trixie that it’s not enough to not be mean to someone, you have to be nice. twilight not only wasn’t mean to sunset after she defeated her, but she was also nice and lifted her up, showing her a better way.

since being here is drive everyone apart. i don’t know the first thing about friendship.”

sunset understood wallflower. she understood what it was like to be new to friendship and not know what it means. even though wallflower almost stole everything from her forever, sunset +

was nice to her. it shows how far she’s come from the lonely & arrogant girl she used to be. it shows that anyone with a kind heart can do great things.

“but the important thing is that you’ve turned yourself around.”

THIS is who sunset shimmer is. a resilient girl with a kind heart who can adapt to any situation. she’s shown multiple times that she can change when she has to, not only with twilight and wallflower but with what adagio told her in sunset’s backstage pass too.

back in the day, everyday WAS the same for her. she was popular and everyone feared her. nothing ever changed. SHE had to change if she wanted things to be different. if she wanted what she desired most.

she’s come so far. when she jumped through the portal and stole the crown, she knew she’d be all alone in a strange new world. but she didn’t care. she thought power and ambition would make her happy. her aura was changed from cyan to red in rainbow rocks, symbolizing her +

redemption and change of heart. when she stood with her friends and sang their song of unity and friendship, THAT was when she truly left her past behind. she’s the 7th element of harmony, empathy, and she has the power to understand others and feel what they feel, a power that +

is perfect for her considering everything she’s been through. all the things that have happened to her, all the loneliness, the mistrust, the hardships, have taught her one thing:

the only failure is not to try, and you should never stop trying.

she truly succeeded in that. +
