Brown Sugar is basically a DIY instructional video of how to get out of the friend zone. Let's examine this theory
The story talks about life long friends, Syd and Dre. Syd acknowledges Dre asked her out before and she turned him down, effectively placing him in the (best) friend zone. Dre would remain here until their 30s, even though Syd ain't had a date in YEARS.
Dre eventually is done competing with himself, finds him an established woman who can see himself with forever. Just the way he describes this new woman makes Syd uneasy. And when she sees the ring, jealousy jumps out.
Now that Dre is happy with someone else, what does Syd do? Has sex with him before the wedding! Dre even asking should be call it all off, and Syd is like naw. Trying to reclaim the power struggle that is the friendzone.
Dre gets married though. Syd still lonely. So Dre still kinda escaped. Syd even starts dating a professional basketball player just to get over dude she put in the friend zone to begin with! Listen, if you start dating Kobe to get over me, I'm winning.
But Syd's homeboy and the wife are hip to game. So the wife cheats, which leads to this legendary scene
And sooner than later, both friends are single again. Dre, though, is experiencing a career renaissance and his confidence is on cloud 9. HE'S NOT GOING BACK TO FRIEND ZONE!
Instead, he get her to admit she's been in love with him this WHOLE TIME on public radio and then demands a date over the airwaves.
I would suggest not going through such extreme measures in your own life. Alimony and adultery shouldn't be a normal avenue to love. Thanks for coming to my Twitter talk.
