I get a lot of questions about why we are paying off our mortgage so aggressively. 🤣

So here you go...

Most of your finance accounts will agree consumer debt isn’t going to help your financial situation. But...
They will also say, with record low interest rates, holding onto your mortgage and investing that money into the market is the more financially smart decision.

I agree and disagree.

I think you should AT LEAST be investing 15% of your annual gross income during this stage.
We currently are investing 20% of our annual gross income.

But life isn’t all about maximizing the dollar. It’s about maximizing your happiness and freedom.

Anything over 15% available to you should be used at your discretion to reward yourself in the best way you can.
There is an opportunity cost to everything, and we have calculated it.

We stand strong behind our decision.

I believe your home is an emotional asset, and therefore, it is not the best investment.
People will justify overspending and extending themselves on their personal residence because of the emotional tie to it and that’s ok.

Enjoy it.

Erin and I made the decision with our first home purchase that we wanted something comfortable & manageable.
We were lucky enough to be able to do a lot of the work ourselves (with family help) to keep our overall investment low but shortly after moving in, the thought of having a mortgage hanging over us for 30 years was not something either of us wanted.
Our goal became to have no payments and be 100% in control of our lives! We will only pay ourselves.

We first paid off $76k in non-mortgage debt in 1 year.

We then turned our focus to the house. We have paid off $137K in 1.5 years and have just $91k remaining.
Our goal is to pay the home off by the end of 2021!

Because we are doing this so aggressively and we are still investing 20% of our annual gross income in the meantime, we believe this is the best route for us because of the true financial freedom we will gain from it.
