Last July there was an excellent Twitter thread about sign language in storytimes (not the thread started by @ItsMissJulia, but around the same time). I seem to have lost the bookmark... anyone know what I'm talking about?
Trying to explain in a class dicussion board how baby sign language infantilizes ASL and how the intent for using ASL in storytime (be it accessibility, representation or exposure to a different culture) is perhaps not aligned with the impact...
...particularly if the storytime provider is not themselves fluent in ASL. Would not those goals be better accomplished by connecting children with actual representatives from Deaf culture? 🧐
Anyways, there was a thread that explained this much better, and if anyone remembers it and has it saved I would be so very grateful! 🙏
