/ From a course Oregon math educators are encouraged to take. As always, a mix of the commonsense -- Make material relevant to students -- with as much culture-war provocation as possible, as though dismantling capitalism is an appropriate goal for public school math teacher
/ I think part of the way these consulting firms work and perpetuate themselves is that the radical material triggers angry responses, and the presence of angry responses 'proves' the need for more training. The obvious point is that "I don't want my kid https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/ORED/bulletins/2bfbb9b?fbclid=IwAR3U8iS7fCD-g0NArQh74qlRa5IVFiTXoithZA89kMvmD0DETmzcV9DuQdg
/ in a math class where one of the goals is overthrowing capitalism" is in all likelihood a very common sentiment, even among liberals. If you treat it as a *racist* sentiment, then it proves we're all bathing in bigotry and need more assistance from helpful for-profit trainers
/ The point I made in my newsletter the other day is that whenever stuff like this happens it is unlikely to have any effect whatsoever on privileged kids in Oregon (and elsewhere). Those kids' parents' will make sure they get whatever actual math instruction they need, one
/ way or another. They will continue to be accepted into elite colleges at disproportionate rates, in part because the best, most rigorous education is always reserved for the wealthiest kids. For the other kids, we get ahodgepodge of other radical agendas adulterating math
