The government are talking the talk on "freedom of speech" in universities. Let's see if they walk the walk. Prove me wrong: only hate speech, reactionary and libertarian/right wing views will be defended. This the beginning of the end of academic freedom.
They say that "public funds must never be used for political purposes", which reminds me of this. Very well said by @Adam_Creme: https://twitter.com/Adam_Creme/status/1350023255546068993
Why is preserving a rose-tinted and unrealistic view of Empire not "political"? Why is clinging to the incorrect notion we were the first country to abolish slavery (when we are not) considered not political? Why is combatting racial disadvantage considered "political"?
Seriously, take a look at what is being cited as "evidence" here... An opinion poll for Laurence Fox's Reclaim Party. A party with no councillors, no MPs, and only 41.5k followers for their Twitter account.
This tweet from @JimMFelton sums it up rather well. https://twitter.com/JimMFelton/status/1360875258404876294
For the avoidance of doubt:
Being honest about slavery and Empire is NOT re-writing history, nor is it denigrating British culture. Sanctioning those who are prepared to be honest about these matters is "political".
Be in no doubt: this is not about freedom of speech. This is about government control of academia. As said by @Otto_English: https://twitter.com/Otto_English/status/1360967564566949888
