another day thinking about active safety
i profoundly respect for the people who create tools and processes that affirmatively detect disaster /conditions/ and prevent disaster /events/ from becoming able to occur
the critical aspect of these tools is that they don't stop disasters. they *forbid* them. huge difference

the most important thing we've been taught over and over and over again in twelve millennia is that people fuck up. we cannot rely on people to consistently, reliably, and automatically do the correct thing every single time. it is just not possible.
i personally believe that the entire purpose, if one can be said to exist, of _all_ human civilization and achievement is to do exactly two things:
- eliminate conditions that cause human harm or death
- eliminate conditions that require human labor
all else follows from these

not a joke, every time one of these circuit or saw breakers fires, the insurance should pay the makers the median amount of damage they just prevented from occurring. eat the rich and all but i want _these specific people_ to be just swimming in money
