A lot of BIPOC Catholics I’ve met and talked to since the George Floyd murder have all stated that for a long time we felt crazy. Like what we saw and felt and knew about how we were treated differently in Catholic circles by White people was us overreacting.
For Hispanic/Latinos, we see a quick change in how we go from accepted and held up to rejected and dismissed depending on how honest we are about racism. As long as we don’t say anything, we are good, but the moment we do? Welp, first we are “warned”.
Then we begin to get ghosted and THEN we start to hear about how so and so said we dissent from Church Teaching. This is cancel culture. But White Catholics can *openly* dissent from Church teaching and still get work speaking and writing.
And if BIPOCs call them out in their dissent and/or racism, suddenly we are accused of cancel culture. The same ones who have seen our BIPOC be actually cancelled from radio, have heard the lies told on us or have seen the way we are vetted vs how white people are vetted to speak
I am thankful for those people who made space for me after my son’s suicide. I am thankful for the people who (as Amanda Seales says) so happen to be White, who get it and helped me with the website and support it. We have so much work to do.
My point is, BIPOC Catholics see it. We talk about it. Even if we don’t call you out on it publicly. We see it for what it is and we no longer question ourselves about it because we just text each other and confirm. And we are going to keep calling people to the Gospel.
