if u understand racial capitalism, then u can see the “causal link” b/w r*zon*ngs/market rate development exclusively in neighborhoods of color

“Capitalism and racism did not break from the old order but rather evolved from it to produce a modern world system of “racial capitalism” dependent on slavery, violence, imperialism, and genocide.” -Cedric Robinson
pls miss me w/ the pro-growth, supply side shit, build build build at the expense of racialized populations—the business model is exploitation, propped up by history of undervaluing Black homes, neighborhoods & ppl. they ain’t building in UES for a reason
and it’s not just “community opposition” or that land prices are higher in white neighborhoods. it’s bc we have yet to address the legacy of racism, white violence & white sabotage in housing policy
land prices are higher in white neighborhoods bc govt policy has made white neighborhoods more valuable—they were greenlined, able to see an influx of private & subsidized capital & investment for decades. capital (& thus value) flowed out of Black neighborhoods
but now that high value, white neighborhoods are mostly built up, logically the next step is to turn to BIPOC neighborhoods by reattributing value after devaluation for years, creating ghettos & slum conditions, in order to signal profit ability in previously devalued areas
thus, we see the policy of state-sanctioned corporate land grabs/gentrification, bc land is “cheaper” in BIPOC areas (bc of history of devaluation, demonization and racism), w/ the goal of transforming the “ghettos” into areas where white, wealthy folks can feel “safe”
post industrialization, the decline of manufacturing, expansion of credit & financialization, the affluent class invested in multimillion $ office & luxury developments & other amenities to feel “safe” in majority non-white areas

—>neoliberal restructuring of cities
bc of racist govt policies, land values are artificially inflated in white areas and artificially undervalued in Black neighborhoods. and that has opened the door for predatory capitalists to exploit that devaluation of Blackness and embrace gentrification policy
