The tone of most Agunah Day messages irks me so much. This isn't another agunah sob story. This isn't about how we should be sad. This isn't even about how we should be angry. This is about taking back our power.
People are always asking me if there is something we can do. This: https://twitter.com/cwjisrael/status/1360947461255290881
This Agunah Day (happening in just 11 days!) you can fund @cwjisrael's legal work to file damage suits on behalf of women denied gets. Here is how it works:
Get refusal is abuse, and women who suffer this abuse are entitled to compensation from their abusers like any other form of domestic violence. This is what CWJ has done: We have filed and won hundreds of thousands of shekels in damage suits in civil court for women like Michal.
Not only do these suits have a nearly 100% success rate in securing an immediate get & financial relief for these women, they send a clear social message that get refusal is abuse and carries consequences. Most importantly, it gives women back their power and their freedom.
CWJ is filing damage suits for Michal--both against her get-refusing husband and against his father, who has aided and abetted in his son’s abuse. This is what accountability looks like.
Like all of the women we represent, we don’t charge Michal for any of the legal work we do on her behalf. Our legal battle is fueled by donations from people like you, who see injustice for what it is and stand up to say: no more!

What I like about it this strategy is that it centers the women who have been harmed and **provides them with the tools to help themselves.** This is critical--not just so the women can move beyond the stereotype of victimhood, but because it's practical empowerment THAT WORKS.
And get this: IT DOESNT RELY ON THE GENEROSITY OF THE BEIT DIN. It doesn't require the beit din to deem the woman "deserving" of freedom or decide she fulfilled her quota of suffering. It's premised on the idea that women's freedom is a right, period. Violate that right, you pay.
So this isn't just a legal strategy. It's a cultural shift. If you've ever been bothered by my posts about the agunah problem and the way it is (mis)handled, channel that energy into something constructive. Donate and share! https://bit.ly/FreeMichal
And if you feel extra passionate about this, you can become an ambassador for this campaign. Message me and I'll hook you up!
