I’ve been thinking about yesterday’s game and City’s situation in general. I wrote a few things down and it’s turned into a pound shop ‘Things We Think We Think’ style list. So here’s a thread of my thoughts. #hcafc
People are frustrated, and not just about recent results. Simply put, after the way that 19/20 ended, McCann has no credit with the majority of City fans. There are no reserves of good will for him to fall back on, which is why fans are so quick to criticise him and call for his
head after every poor game or bad result. One good half season, especially in a league that many of us feel we should never have been in, will not change that. McCann has to accept it as his cross to bear for as long as he is in charge of City, as do those preaching patience.
City were unlucky yesterday, having created enough opportunities to win the game. MK Dons made few clear cut chances. That can’t be used as an excuse though.
There have been far too many games this season where City have left teams hanging around in games without finishing them off. They’ve needed to find the killer instinct for a long time now.
Good sides go through poor spells. As @MikeHull84 pointed out yesterday, the 2004/05 side went through a disappointing run around about the same time of year. Peter Taylor’s team struggled without Stuart Elliott and won one game in seven between 15/01/05 and 22/02/05.
Who’s to say that this isn’t a similarly poor patch in an otherwise good season? Taylor had the luxury of being able to sign a forward of the calibre of Craig Fagan to help end that run and kick start our promotion push. McCann doesn’t have that option, sadly.
Speaking of influential forwards missing games through injury, the sooner Gavin Whyte is back, the better. I’m slightly worried that we’ve become so dependant on him only 4 games into his loan spell though.
It’s time for Josh Emmanuel to come back into the side. Lewie Coyle hasn’t played badly at all, but Emmanuel was one of our leading lights in the early part of the season.
For me, Emmanuel offers more going forward and frees up whoever is in front of him to find space in field and increase our goal threat.
Dan Crowley is a very good footballer but I think his presence in the team has upset our balance. George Honeyman isn’t influencing games as much as he did previously and I think this is because he is playing a more defensive role than he did previously.
Crowley also seems to need more touches in the build up, at least to my eye, and I wonder if this is slowing us down.
Jacob Greaves has got to bury one of those back post chances, eventually hasn’t he?
This week feels like a big one. City need to bounce back against a poor Wigan team. A win will be expected. Fail to do that and the pressure is really on for a big game against Doncaster, if it wasn’t already.
