Felt good to put mushy Valentine’s Day vibes to good use today. Went on a run to tell the Home Office to #HaveAHeart and end cruel spouse visa rules. Still time to join in ( #& you don’t have to run!) : https://www.jcwi.org.uk/event/have-a-heart-this-valentines-day
Currently our visa rules mean that you have to earn at least £18,600 to have your foreign (non-EU) spouse live with you. It’s a cruel and unjust rule that’s left thousands of people separated from their partners + families for years.
If you want to learn more about these rules and how they affect people this piece is a really good place to start. https://www.forbes.com/sites/freylindsay/2020/10/02/the-visa-requirement-thats-playing-havoc-with-uk-families-during-covid/
These spouse visa rules hurt everyone but are women are particularly affected because they’re more likely to be in low-paying jobs / balancing caring responsibilities.
The rules also mean lots of key workers have no right to a family life. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/may/07/migrant-key-workers-fear-income-falling-below-home-office-minimum
