Shepherd in Spain in 1962 by Evelyn Hofer. She was driving past and saw him with his sheep so stopped to ask if she could take his portrait. He agreed but the sheep ran away as Hofer was setting up her tripod and camera. After taking the photo she offered to pay him and he
...then told her she would have to put the money in his pocket for him as he had no hands and was mostly blind. He had tended sheep here all his life but during the Civil War a bomb had landed just beside where the photo was taken and he had lost his hands and most of his sight.
When you understand the context it is a remarkable portrait of someone whose life had revolved around just this meadow but was still subjected to the tragedy of war. You never know what will happen when you ask a stranger to pose for a portrait.
