In 1946, a young woman gained admission into Lahore’s Hans Raj College. She lived in the dorms as her family was miles away in Gujrat. One day, an older woman came to meet the young student, who had been suggested as a potential bride for her son 1/
The woman came back home to Jhelum, impressed with the girl’s intelligence, beauty and confidence, and told her son, ‘kudi dekh li tere liye, we have seen a girl for you, bass vyah kar le tu.’ The young man heard her out, but said nothing, true to his calm demeanour. 2/
The next day, anxious and excited, he wrote to his friend who also studied in Lahore requesting him to go see the girl. ‘Bhai, zara dekh ke toh aao,’ he wrote. The friend sought her out, and promptly wrote back saying, ‘Dekho she goes for games and swimming early morning...' 3/
'You should come and see the girl for yourself. But I must warn you, badi ladaki hai, she had quite the temper. Daadi kudi hai!’ So, rather nervously, the young man made his way across to Lahore to see the seemingly hot tempered woman he was to shortly marry. 4/
With curious eyes, he watched her from a distance as she made her way across the College grounds- short hair, a petite frame, a fiery demeanour. Then with a shy smile, he told his friend, ‘lagti toh achi hai, she looks quite nice.’ It was love at first sight. 5/
And that was it, in a single glance, their union decided. Months later, in the midst of Partition riots, a calm man married a tempered woman in a city on the banks of river Jhelum. The same couple, along with the man's father, would eventually begin Hitkari pottery in India. 6/6
*Just an addendum - though she mentioned Hans Raj College in our interview, she likely meant DAV College, which was started as a school in 1886 and upgraded to DAV College, Lahore with the renowned educationist Mahatma Hansraj as principal until 1912.
