Twitter whānau in Tāmaki Makaurau - as we go back into #COVID19nz Alert Level 3 I just want to share some findings from our @KidsShareNZ survey that might be helpful - we asked kids what they LIKED about their #neighbourhoods during #Lockdown in 2020 - a thread (artwork by "Avy")
We wanted to understand what supported kids' wellbeing during lockdown - so that we could support/inform future initiatives. What did kids tell us? Lots - but perhaps the most important thing to share is they loved having time with YOU (photo from "Lah").
Slowing down, not being so rushed, & simple activities with whānau were appreciated (walking/biking, pyjama days, baking, TV, and having parents at home) as Josie shared: “I liked going for family walks most days and playing catch, we don't have time to do that normally.”
Nature was important for supporting children's wellbeing - they enjoyed spending time in natural settings, but also simple things like leaf and stick treasure hunts, listening to birds, etc. Just getting outside was great.
Maintaining connections with family and friends was important. This is sometimes easier said than done, but anything we can do to support kids connecting with each other is helpful. Kids also got joy from seeing people out and about, connecting with neighbours (at a distance) etc
We can all play a role in supporting kids' social wellbeing through supporting our own neighbourhood connections - hand-delivered mail in letterboxes, messages in windows, chalk drawings, participating in the NZ Bear Hunt all made a difference (photo from "Rosie")
Kia kaha Tāmaki Makaurau, we've done this before, we can do it again xx
Also we will be sharing complete results through a graphic novel soonish - currently in progress with amazing @carolgreen
