the quarantine works when everyone complies. the vaccinations work when everyone gets them. we can best back authoritarianism if everyone votes. we can unionize if we do not break solidarity.

we act as though our mass culture is independent of our incentives but there has been decreasing room for error in the past five years -- and it is still decreasing -- so one should expect that sanctions for breaking a united front would be more heavily punished.
this is bad but the alternatives are worse.
