The reasons why this is counterproductive range from the obvious tendency of people to react against bullying and constant threats, to the reality that the stress of watching the whole world collapse into ruins is getting to people. It’s certainly getting to me.

In theory, the suggestion is that we need a better vision for people to buy into- a “new normal” that tells them there’s something to hope for, help is on the way. Power which is incapable of recognizing even the most obvious flaws in wildly grandiose and impossible plans.
Power which makes a habit of lying to and manipulating the public, telling them whatever seems useful in order to achieve some unspoken goal.

One does not have to entertain any part of conspiratorial thinking to note that the bargain on offer from known liars is “this treatment won’t protect anyone else, it may or may not help you, and the intolerable life we’ve demanded of you won’t change at all.”

So: why take it?
You cannot “message” your way past this, because your messengers are liars and we all know it. You cannot berate and threaten people past this, because many of us have nothing left to lose. The concentration camp fantasies of pundits aside there’s no capacity for military force.
The only way out is to actually give us something to live for. And I know that’s hard, it’s the hardest damn thing for doctors and politicians and teachers to imagine anyone deserving- but that is what has to be offered. Life without hope is death by installments.
