The City of Vancouver is failing miserably on the housing front. I’ve had the chance to speak to a hand full of builders, and this seems to be a common theme. #vanre
1: The permit process with the City of Vancouver is expensive, extremely time consuming and very frustrating. They all say that the of City of Burnaby is 10 steps ahead of Vancouver. #vanre
2: There are 200+ homes in the COV who would like to build duplexes, but the COV is restricting home owners to build decent size homes. Most COV lots are 33 X 122. If you build a duplex, you’ll get 2 homes that are 1450 SQFT each. Home owners want at least 1750 SQFT each. #vanre
2b: If the COV passed a bylaw tomorrow that allowed duplex’s to be at least 1750 SQFT each (only 300 SQFT more from existing bylaw), there would be a flood of new and affordable housing supply for locals. #vanre
3: @kennedystewart is playing politics. He doesn’t want to consult with home builders and home owners. The COV has had a lot of building planners quit/retire because they are frustrated with the COV’s process. #vanre
4: If the COV wanted to really help with decent/affodsble housing options, they would look closer at the duplex bylaws. A ton of supply is being left untapped because of politics. #vanre
5: Look at how the COV is handling the Strathcona Park disaster. Now tell me that they are doing a good job with housing. The politics needs to stop. We need competent leadership. Restricting an extra 200-300 SQFT is hurting our city. #vanre
6: Speak with home builders and ask them how many homeowners would opt in to build a duplex if they were a tiny bit bigger. Speak with homeowners and ask them if they would opt in to build a duplex if they were a tiny bit bigger. #vanre
Weird to see people get upset at someone for bringing forward an idea that might help our housing crisis. It’s a massive issue, and one idea is not going to fix all or even be a solution for many, but it will help some. Stop bitching and float some better ideas. #vanre
