Gen Z mocking Millenials is my new favourite genre of navel-gazing, and they’re not wrong (except about centre partings). It’s not our fault we’re so cringingly pure. But I don’t think they quite understand why?
Look, Gen Z, we were trained our whole lives to survive a future that exploded the moment we hit adulthood. We’re as fucked as you are, but we didn’t see it coming. We didn’t know how badly we were being lied to. You lot did, and our job is to help you unfuck the world.
We had none of the skills to cope with the kind of adulthood we were dealt, and we’ve had to make it up as we go along while paying down huge debts and somehow not becoming arseholes. Forgive us if we comfort read and talk to our doggos like the babies we can’t afford to have.
As for Harry Potter- it was the probably the last true artefact of a kind of mass culture that just doesn’t exist anymore, and at its heart is the lovely lie we all grew up with and still wish was true: that if you work hard and try to be a good person, things will be alright.
We’re weird about our Hogwarts houses because we have no idea who the fuck we’re supposed to be and our parents have all become wingnuts.
We’re a naive generation, which isn’t the same as being immature. The elder generation cocked everything up and refused to fix it, and we’ve had to handle a lot of responsibility without any of the power or security that was supposed to go with it. It won’t be any easier for you-
The difference is that you knew that from the start.
This makes most of us feel extremely protective of you. We’re basically a generation of dorky elder siblings, and I say that as a dorky elder sibling.
You’re right about the skinny jeans, though, they were always horrendous.
