The official position of the Republican party is that the President can do whatever he wants in the last few weeks of his Presidency without punishment. Murder people, steal money from the treasury, sell U.S. secrets to foreign governments. Oh well! Not enough time to convict!
It's a process issue, you see. Was he guilty of the crimes? Sure. But they couldn't squeeze in the trial in time, so there's nothing they can do.
This isn't a joke. It's literally the basis for the "not guilty" crew. Their position is that if a future President gives Alaska to the Russians in exchange for a personal sum of one trillion dollars, that President couldn't be convicted, as long as he did it in, say, mid-January
The Republicans in the Senate have created, no joke, a Purge-type chunk of the Presidency. If you commit crimes during the lame duck Purge times, you can never be held accountable. You can even run again!
I mean look at this bullshit. This is incredible bullshit, right here. Incredible!
"He did all this stuff, and it was a crime, and people died. We are the people charged by the Constitution to hold Presidents accountable for their crimes. Sadly, we could not hold him accountable for his crimes, because...of...the timing?"
This is a stunning moral failure. Admitting his actions were criminal makes it *worse*, because McConnell is *begging* other people (SDNY? Civil suits?) to charge Trump with crimes and stop him from running again. He's begging other people to do what he didn't, out of cowardice.
This is why people hate politicians. Some of them -- and nearly all Republicans, it seems -- make decisions out of self-interest. Their hypocrisy and partisanship and dishonesty are blindingly clear. They all know he's guilty. They all know he's dangerous. They just don't care.
