The Lincoln Project: Until the Weaver news, I thought they were going to be the boil on the world's rear end for a long while, but that's been lanced. The rot is being forced out by media and other people putting the squeeze on them.
Steve Schmidt, one of the co-founders, resigned yesterday, making a public statement saying that he was not aware of Weaver's proclivities until this past January, and that because of past trauma in his life he was outraged.
Although he apologized to Horn for his very public feud with her, I don't believe him when he says he "didn't know" about Weaver. Everybody in the world of political consulting knew. Why? Because it's a small world, and everyone knows everyone.
In my opinion, Steve Schmidt is a grifter who got his money out of the grift of the Lincoln Project, as did many of the other founders/board members, which it seems at this time, to be the whole point of it all.
It would have continued on, raking in more cash from the unsuspecting and the gullible, except that the revelations of Weavers activities threw sand in the once smoothly running gears of this very large grift.
Everyone that has voluntarily left the Lincoln Project has expressed "shock and outrage" about the revelations about Weaver, but what I really think they're outraged about is that the money tap has been shut off after enriching themselves.
Weaver is being castigated for being the monster that he is, and rightly so, but blame also accrues to those who knew of his proclivities, yet remained silent.
Whether that silence was out of fear of losing a job, or a career, or it was because of promises of riches to come for their silence isn't yet known in full and doesn't really matter.
What matters is that because of that silence, over 100 young men have had their lives shattered, and will carry guilt and shame possibly for the rest of their lives even though it wasn't their fault.
I would wager that some of those young men whose careers were cut short, could have become leading lights in the world of politics, and could have done much good for the country.
We'll never know that now, because of the actions of one man, and the enablers who knew, but kept silent. This is a tragedy, both for those young men, and for our society as a whole.
