I made a TTC construction timeline! We're all familiar with those "evolution of the TTC map" videos, but I always wondered how long each project took, from construction starting to opening, instead of just a timeline of opening dates.

Below will be a thread of takeaways:
The timeline reveals what I think are 4 distinct ages of TTC construction

1. First Construction (1949-1954)

Yonge was the first subway line in Canada and was an overnight success, having higher than expected ridership. This prompted the TTC into the next age of...
2. Rapid Expansion (1959-1987)

The popularity of the subway fueled lighting fast construction, completing most of current Line 2 within 5 years! Line 1 saw rapid expansion on University, and north on Spadina and Yonge.
3. Political Shenanigans (1992-2002)

Things start to slow down, as the province and the boroughs of Toronto start fighting for rapid transit. Sheppard gets cut into a stub. Eglinton West is completely cancelled.
Visually it's easy to see the 1992-2002 age but it really started in 1982, when the Province forced Scarborough to take on it's ICTS technology. And this age still extends on to today, as City and Province are still fighting over transit plans.
4. Upcoming Transit Renaissance? (2021-2030)

After a decade of no construction in the 2000s, our timeline starts to light up again. However, SSE, YNSE, and OL haven't started construction yet, so hopefully these projects finish on time.
Let me know if you have any suggestions! I'm planning to do a revised version, where height of the bars represent length of track built, and also add in key dates such as when plans (Transity City, GO Urban, etc) are proposed.
