SEO is an overlooked superpower for seed stage startups.

Why is it overlooked?

My theory:

SEO is viewed as medicine for the problem of demand generation.

But it's actually medicine for the problem of achieving product-market-fit.

How does nailing SEO help nailing PMF?

There's no room for confirmation bias in SEO

As per @shreyas:

"starting with a blank slate keeps a product manager’s biggest enemy—confirmation bias—at bay"

SEO is an ideal blank slate https://twitter.com/shreyas/status/1352860352183078913

One of my favorite pieces of startup advice is from @paulg, a lesson from his startup Viaweb:

"one of our rules of thumb was run upstairs"

He's referring to building product features, but I think SEO fits perfectly.

The best growth channel for early stage startups is word-of-mouth.

Google SEO is the deepest well for WOM pre-PMF.

Making content that Google highly recommends builds a muscle that is primed for building tight product-market fit

SEO is not easy. It's running upstairs.

But it creates a durable asset + a muscle that scales.

Plenty of startups win without SEO, so of course there's plenty of routes to success without it.

But the hit rate of startups that prioritize SEO early is surprisingly high.
