McConnell is now saying that Trump should be prosecuted by the US Justice system for his role in the insurrection! Talk about kicking the can down the road.
Mitch applauded the Senate Republicans who backed Trump for avoiding a "political" process of persecution, but then called for Biden's DOJ to prosecute Trump, which will unleash howls of divisive outrage from those same Republicans when they run for office in 2022 & 24.
I'd put money on Mitch hoping Biden's DOJ prosecutes Trump, and then using the backlash against it to take back the Senate and/or House in 2022. "Why are those vindictive Democrats more interested in hurting Trump than helping you?" The ads write themselves.
Mitch knows that no GOP voters will remember what he said today. They will only remember that he voted to acquit. And his plan is to make GOP messaging in 2022 & 24 largely about protecting Trump from Democratic persecution and "cancel culture."
Look at this list. Murkowski is the only one who faces an election before 2026, and her situation is pretty unique. Toomey and Burr are retiring. https://twitter.com/carolinerkenny/status/1360693016906850305?s=20
Oops, Romney is up in 2024, but like Murkowski in Alaska, Romney's relationship to the decidedly less-Trumpy voters of Utah is distinctive.
The point still stands, however. Mitch McConnell just gave a meaningless anti-Trump speech that was designed to obscure the fact that he is 100% committed to keeping the GOP entirely beholden to Trump and his base.
