I want to take the time to highlight Black women who choose to leave academic medicine or were violently forced out due to racism and sexism. I want to amplify their stories, because they are all courageous advocates for a better future. #HappyBlackHistoryMonth

Since leaving academia, @uche_blackstock is now the founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, geared towards addressing racism in medicine and undoing the racialized health inequities. She is commonly featured on MSNBC and Yahoo News as a Medical Contributior.
Dr. Oni Blackstock left @EinsteinMed for the New York City Health Department to lead the Bureau of HIV. Doc states “my supervisor was this white gay man who would not allow me to inhabit my position.... I was constantly in his shadow. I was constantly undermined and humiliated.”
Since leaving both academia and government agency,
@oni_blackstock is founder and Executive Director of Health Justice, a consulting firm providing content expertise in HIV, sexual health, LGBTQ health and racial equity to organizations focused on public health and health care.

Since then, Dr. Khoury @ayshakhoury has been the loudest advocate against abuse and violence for Black faculty, staff, and trainees. Her story has gained National recognition and we look forward to continually amplifying her voice.
Dr. Princess Dennar was recently fired from her position as the first Black woman program director for MedPeds @TulaneMedicine. https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.laed.247389/gov.uscourts.laed.247389.1.0_1.pdf
Although we do not know what the future holds for Dr. Dennar, we do know we need the community to support and uplift her and her trainees. https://www.gofundme.com/f/dr-princess-dennar-legal-defense-fund
I have no hope in academic medicine and I know the outcomes that have been preset for someone like me. However, I do have hope in knowing these women fought to be unapologetically themselves and for that I find great joy. The violence they endured disgusts me.
All of this natural hair and melanated skin. I just want better for these woman. Their smiles give me hope.
