I know people want practical tips about writing.

But it’s often ephemeral and instinctual.

(Only content peddlers will outright dispute this)

And this goes double for short story writing

That being said, here’s my process

⬇️
The beauty of writing short stories, especially if they are sub 5k words is that you can write them in one session

You picture how the story ends &you race headlong towards it

Like a car at night you can only see the short space that the headlights show in front

Yet you arrive
So my short story process is this:

- Have an image or scene in mind. From dreams, memories, reveries etc
- Think about it in depth.
- Intuit a theme based on it
- Figure out a (very) loose structure that looks at that theme and moves me towards that end image.

⬇️
- Start drafting in Notes on iPad while sat in chair
- Drink espresso and write, move around if get stuck
- Keep going until the end or stop after 4 hours, whichever comes soon
- Leave draft alone for a few days
- Reread and edit
- Give it a third pass if needed
- Post on site
