The House's impeachment managers have laid out an overwhelming case of irrefutable evidence for the Senate to convict Donald Trump for the deadly insurrection on January 6. We have seen new video evidence that showed that as bad as 1/6 was, it was very nearly much, much worse.
Trump’s mob was steps from the VP, MoCs and staff, and we watched their horrifying attacks on law enforcement. We even heard new details of a call in the middle of the insurrection where Trump told McCarthy: "I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are."
If Trump’s incitement of this violent insurrection isn’t impeachable, what is? He spent weeks laying the groundwork for January 6 to halt the counting of electoral college ballots. He incited an imminent violent attack directed against his enemies in the Capitol.
And then he refused to intervene to stop the attack, even when the full horror was obvious to everyone. Trump’s lawyers have offered no real defense of his actions, just distraction, misrepresentation & the dangerous legal theory that a former POTUS is immune from accountability.
Trump’s Team has conceded to bringing GOP Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s statement about the details of Trump’s conversation with McCarthy during the attack on January 6 into the trial record. They did not challenge or contradict the statement.
But the strongest evidence of Trump’s dereliction of duty during and after the attack has always been his own public statements on that day and his own deafening refusal to say 'stop the attack.' This conduct speaks louder than anything else.
Presidents must be accountable for every day in office. It's unthinkable that the Founding Fathers left us virtually defenseless against a POTUS' treachery in his last days, letting him violate his oath & incite an insurrection against our democracy just because he's a lame duck.
