bts are extremely creative artists & i will not rest until everyone & their mother knows it — an ongoing thread that showcases the group's unique ideas & underrated lyricism
UGH — to go ‘ugh’ is to make a disdainful sound (in eng) & to suddenly lose your temper, usually over something minor (in korean). bts express their disgust towards those who dogpile on others & can't differentiate between real rage & the performative anger that burns w/o purpose
134340 — the declassification of pluto is used as an extended metaphor for a breakup. pluto lost its identity/status because of eris (another dwarf planet). similarly, the speaker was replaced with somebody else. now they're stuck in orbit, w/o a sense of self, aimlessly drifting
UHGOOD — if you’re hesitant or unsure how to describe how you truly feel, you might say that you're, "uh...good?" in korean, to be 어긋 (uh-geut) is to be a little off the mark, to fall short of an ideal or to miss something by just a little bit, even though you tried to reach it
DIS-EASE — bts attempt to overcome their own struggles (inability to rest, productivity culture) & the unease they feel when they confront the diseases in our society. the song fights to stay positive; it explodes (at the bridge) before cooling back down, the way a fever breaks.
dis-ease also questions what is means to be sick & whether it is in humankind's nature to be evil & ugly. does the world label us as 'ill' because we are truly ill, or because it is corrupt itself?
DIONYSUS — bts compare art to alcohol, claiming that you can get drunk on it. like dionysus, the greek god of wine & madness, bts hold power & status in this field: “breaking a new record is a race with myself.” and, like dionysus’ followers, they party to the point of ecstasy
MOON — jin orbits army, grounded by us. the melancholic lyrics of moon are masked by its bright, bubbly beat. this reinforces the idea that, until you look further, the dark side of the moon is hidden from the earth. the song reveals jin - our moon - to us in his entirety.
PIED PIPER — based on the story of the pied piper, who lured rats to their deaths with the sound of his flute, this song warn fans about the detrimental effects of idol worship. pied piper serves as a confession, a cautionary tale & an interesting commentary on idol-fan dynamics.
