There seems to be a widespread assumption that “everyone wants this to end”, “this” meaning lockdown. I think we need to part with it
There are lots in power who’d be happy to keep travel restrictions with the global South, profound isolation for people held in prison/detention, a ban on teenagers mixing in public, an utterly encompassing workday, forever. And many more who won’t push to bring them back
It will require actual political effort and measured critiques of lockdown to ensure these things do not remain in some form. Depressing in the extreme that all such critiques are atm met so angrily by so many. You can disagree with the timing but that’s not what I see happening.
It’s naïve in the extreme to think that all of the norms we rapidly internalised in a crisis will just melt away. Has that ever happened?
