The phrase “old lady” in my language and culture is said with such reverence it’s not a put down. It has to do with grandmothers who hold expert knowledge, wisdom, and skills. Elders, in other words.
In English you see landscapes peppered with names like “old woman’s bay.” Which sometimes are translations of the original Indigenous place names. I understand immediately there is story to that place. I may not know the story, but I know how to act there because it’s name.
I don’t like the way in Canadian culture (generally speaking) older women (and I suppose all older people) are not held up. It’s like once you get old you’re supposed to just disappear or something. It’s weird to me coming from a culture where old & young learn from one another.
I’m tweeting this because I just saw a Twitter account of someone’s grandma. And I just loved seeing her face. And hearing her voice. And I want more grandma’s on social media. That’s all. Have a great day everyone.
