tbh, it's naive but not offensive to me. And we'd all be lying if the question about PLA losses isn't what's kept the peace for 70 years. *If* they can take and hold Taiwan, it would be a bigger op than D Day. Losses aren't just deaths, but embarrassing setbacks. https://twitter.com/adam_ni/status/1360151620902871041
One of the absolutely dumbest things the CCP has done is convince its people that taking Taiwan would be child's play. That they're only holding back for now, reunification is inevitable - they're just waiting for the right time.
Preparing the Chinese pop for decades that a Taiwan 'reunification' invasion to transform it into a PRC colonial province would be as easy as Desert Storm is going to make them question your plans if half the PLAAF and PLAN is wiped out without clear progress.
On the American side, re: casualties. Let's just say that the PLA is openly pitching Pearl Harbor II with ballistic missiles. If they succeed and clearly fired the first shots preemptively...
I'd advise start reading from Guadalcanal and Okinawa.

And I'll leave it that my paternal is grandfather didn't dodge kamikazes on a destroyer because of the value of any particular Pacific Island. Japan hit first, US would stay through to finish and win the fight brought to us.
