after months of being pretty disciplined, today I indulged and made a tiny game again!

its not that cool, so instead of relasing it as usual, I am going to quickly discuss the development in a thread:
(my pc is dying, so typing this thread is gonna take some time bc i constantly have to reboot the pc)
started with a bunny, intending to make a single screen platformer.

the core mechanic was about choosing to jump left or right.
you can not move except by jumping and have no aircontrol.
you can, however, double jump!
made if feel a bit better (wider & slightly higher jumps) and tested the possibilities created by this movement system!
quickly realised that this was way too imprecise for a puzzle platformer!

but that means it is perfect for a "getting over it" - like!
quickly added a camera system and made a bigger level and it felt a lot nicer!
to make it truly weird to control, i added in the possibility to change direction in mid air by double-jumping!

also, some horrible first art attempts!
after removing the horrible art, i tweaked the values of the movement code to make it feel better (less gravity, higher jumps, wider jumps) and remade the level design of the starting area to accommodate the higher mobility.
thanks to @Franrekk for giving me some tips on how to make the art better!

now it rly looks like a bunny :O

(dinner break, ill continue this soon)
next up was level design, even more colors and some circles spawning in the background for visual noise
to make this tiny thing feel more impactful i made a tileset that has like 10 colors and then slowly switch from one color to the next as you move up the level!
also used HSL adjusting effects to make the colors POP!

for the level design, I tried to always have 2 paths that you can take, with one beaing a lot easier and slower (here on right) and one being faster and harder (here on left)
bc i was even lazier than normal, i made the control explanaitions part of the main level.

The walls & instructions dissapear when you do a double jump.
after having done that, you know everything u need to beat the game
after i had exhausted all basic level design stuff for the enclosed space, I made the level open up, added some dirty wrapping code and designed the final part of the game to be more open (and harder)
like... a lot harder
for the ending, i initially wanted to give the bunny wings, but then decided to go for the good old complete reversal of rules instead!

when you reach the goal, you can swim through the tiles and float around! its nice!
after that, I added sound effects and lost steam during composing the music.

the whole thing just felt kind of unneccesary?
it has interesting ideas in it (i especially like the color tiles) but overall it is not exciting, so I decided to just drop the project and call it a day
this often happens when i make games just "to make games".

like, need to have something concrete to explore or i will not finish the game.

still small experiements like this bring me joy and sometimes yield interesting stuff that i can then use for other projects!
so yeah, hope this was informative!

if you want to play the unfinished game, you can do that here:
