If a reporter ever contacts you and you don’t want to talk to them, don’t talk to them. If you do want to talk to them, don’t talk to them. If you’re not sure if you want to talk to them, don’t talk to them.
If you want, you can say a lawyer told you not to talk to them. https://twitter.com/drethelin/status/1360624343299092488

Reporters are like cops - a cynic might say they are just another department of The Man - in that there is literally nothing you can say to them that will help you if they don’t already believe whatever it is you are trying to tell them.
They are experts at spin, they have all the power, the story will convey what they want it to convey in the way they want to convey it. If they’re on your side, they will make you look good even if you don’t talk to them. If they’re not nothing you say will change their minds.
If you don’t talk to them, could that irritate them and make them decide to look worse? Yes, with both cops and reporters. But if they were decent, that wouldn’t happen anyway, so the chances that kissing up to them will help are small since they can’t be trusted.
And at least if you didn’t talk to them at all they will have to outright make up quotes if they want to quote you and every once in a while they do actually get in trouble for that, plus sometimes you can find another reporter who’s mad at them and get them to do a hit piece.
