Thread: For all the comparisons between protests in #HongKong, #Thailand and #Myanmar, the three movements have actually displayed some quite different tactics. /1
Hong Kong protests were varied and used a number of tactics, but are probably best remembered for their fluidity (Be Water), targeted destruction of property and willingness to engage in one to one physical confrontations with the police. /2
Although we've also seen some colourful protests in Myanmar, à la Thailand, they seem to be pinning most hope on their civil disobedience campaign, including nationwide strikes. /3
Thailand has captured the world's attention with creative themed protests (e.g. Harry Potter), and symbolism (the plaque/หมุด), but they now seem unsure of which direction to take and may be struggling to innovate beyond the decades old Thai tradition of organised mass rallies /4
Although the different movements have all learned and borrowed from each other in a number of well-documented ways, cultural and structural conditions mean there are limits in the extent to which tactics are transferable. /5
For example, I have my doubts that the HK tactics or Myanmar-style civil disobedience campaign would be very effective in Thailand (explaining why would be a whole other thread).
Protesters in Thailand have some thinking to do - what's going to work best in their context? /End
