This is complex. Let's put away the orientalism for a few mins, OK? We should not expect that people MUST touch anyone they aren't comfortable with. BUT women officials must not feel excluded from ceremonies or workplace interactions. FIFA has no clue how to manage this. https://twitter.com/tammytabby/status/1360315286419873792
Women officials are a part fo the game and should thus be treated. I am absolutely not here for Westerners shouting about sexism from Brown men because your own agencies and associations are riddled with top-tier misogyny and intentional exclusion of non cis het men.
This was badly handled. Yes.
Am I happy Qatar hosting the WC when there are obvious gaps? No.
Will I accept vacuous criticisms rooted in xenophobia and racism? No.
Do I think the Qatar organizing committee is a mess? Yes.
Am I also concerned about entendured servitude? Yes.
This Qatari official could have handed flowers, put his head over heart (very kind and warm greeting I receive from observant Muslim men who do not wish to touch me) or even nod. This was terribly executed. AND THE WOMEN DESERVE BETTER.
I am an observant Muslim women and I witness men and women of strong faith (ALL FAITHS) greet each other with deference and respect.

This ain't it.
Lastly, this is a very clear reminder not to look to FIFA for anything on diplomatic or culturally appropriate.

Need I remind everyone that while Infantino was watching the Tegran Derby a few years ago, Iranian women were being arrested at Azadi Stadium for trying to enter?
Summary:

1) careful that your criticisms and expectations are rooted in colonial practice and racism.

2) FIFA is trash.

3) Women always deserve better. And men fail constantly at doing this.
4) Women, don't assume that all women want to be greeted physically. That's not the case.
5) Post-Covid 19, I am not sure I am shaking anyone's hand tbh. I am fine with fist bumps.
